PEN Computing Takes A Detailed Look Into The History Of Microsoft's Tablet PC

Flashback to 1992-1993: The pen computer craze is at its height. GRiD, NEC, Momenta, NCR, Compaq, Samsung, Toshiba, IBM, Dauphin and others are all marketing pen computers running Pen Windows. The target is the consumer, and the hype says that the pen will largely replace the keyboard. Flashforward to 2001-2002: Is it going to happen all over again? It looks like it might. Microsoft is in the process of defining the Microsoft Tablet PC platform hardware specification, along with a pen-interface layer that will sit on top of Windows XP Professional. The initial target is corporate users, "knowledge workers with a productivity focus." Five big OEMs have signed up to build Tablet PC products. Microsoft is starting to crank up the hype engine, but so far the media is resisting.

How To Catch Bad Guys With Pocket PC And Wireless Technology - Sgt. Larry Bryant Of The Los Angeles County Sherriffs Department To Speak During The Pocket PC Summit Conference

Equipping Law Enforcement for the 21st Century - A Look Into How The Los Angeles County Sherrifs Department is Using Pocket PCs to Catch Bad Guys

Sgt. Larry Bryant of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department "can use his hand-held organizer to instantly search more than a million mug shots by such variables as eye color, height and even distinctive tattoos. So instead of driving back to the office to pull a file, Bryant can look up a person's booking profile--including color photograph, address and aliases--while out on the street. The software designed by San Diego-based ImageWare Systems Inc. was introduced this year and is among the latest technology focusing on local law enforcement." (source: www.iwsinc.com/latimes.cfm) Sgt. Bryant will be speaking during the upcoming Pocket PC Summit conference.

MEG Expo > Conference Sessions > Rob Tercek
Machines That Go Ping Founder And CEO, Rob Tercek, To Speak During The Debut MEG Expo
At the very first Pocket PC Summit during the month of October 2001, we were fortunate to have Rob Tercek as a keynote speaker, then one of the top executives of Packet Video. Rob has since moved on to form Machines That Go Ping, a strategic advisory and operational management group for digital content and enabling technology ventures. With years of experience in the entertainment and interactive industries, Rob returns as a speaker during the premiere Mobile Entertainment & Gaming Expo
.
Rob will be moderating a panel entitled, Mobile Messaging and Entertainment - Digital Media for Mobile Devices - Worldwide, the fastest-growing segment of mobile data is messaging. Over 200 billion messages were sent last year, and volume continues to surge. Messaging now exceeds 12% of revenue for most of the GSM operators. Premium SMS has ignited the mobile entertainment economy by providing a simple billing mechanism for two-way content. And now, SMS is evolving into a delivery mechanism for rich media, including pictures, music, animation and even movies. We've gathered the leading providers of mobile entertainment to learn their views on messaging and the future of interactive entertainment on mobile devices.

Rob's keynote presentation during the first Summit was one of the visionary presentations during the conference. Rob's keynote is now available for free download. To download the Rob Tercek Pocket PC Summit keynote presentation visit the Machines That Go Ping website at www.mtgp.com/.

Pocket PC Summit Exhibitor, Epiphan, Launches CEAnywhere During The Summit
Epiphan joins the Pocket PC Summit family as a Technology Sponsor and exhibitor. Epiphan will be providing CEAnywhere to Summit attendees to enhance their conference and learning experience.

CEAnywhere provides remote support for the mobile workforce. In the fast paced world of mobile computing, Information Technology (IT) professionals are expected to support an increasing number of executives and devices. Support personnel need an efficient, cost effective method to manage this workload. The advantages and benefits that come from the true nature of mobile computing are lost when a mobile device is out of commission on an IT professional's desk for service. At the same time, the odds of a mobile device having its own mobile support team to accompany it on it's travels are slim . These devices are an integral part of business communication, and any downtime means lost productivity, and lost dollars.

Epiphan can be found on the Internet at www.epiphan.com. And, for more information about CEAnywhere visit the official product website at www.ceanywhere.com.

Chris De Herrera .NET Compact Framework > Interview
Pocket PC Summit Writer, Robert Levy, Interviews Microsoft .NET Compact Framework Technical Evangelist, Kent Sharkey, About The Future Of The .NETcf Platform
In this exclusive interview, Kent Sharkey unfolds Microsoft's strategy for the .NET Compact Framework, it's purpose and functionality, and how it connects disparate devices and systems. We'd like to thank Kent for taking the time to talk to Pocket PC Summit interviewer, Robert Levy.

A brief excerpt of the interview follows -

RL: In your own words, how would you define the goals and strategy Microsoft is using to merge existing (and future) mobile technology with the larger concept of ".NET"?
KS: Good one. If you think of the overall goal of .NET as helping programs (and people) to communicate better it becomes clearer. Today, and in the past, this has been fairly difficult in the mobile space. People needed to be mobile experts, and used primitive tools to craft apps for Pocket PC or phones. Microsoft is attempting to make this easier for developers, and to enable new forms of applications by doing this.

RL: What online resources do you recommend for developers interested in learning more about the .NET Compact Framework?KS: We're already beginning to see a vibrant community forming around .NET Compact Framework. There are discussion lists, mailing lists and websites appearing everywhere. Some of the best I've seen have been DevelopMentor's CF list (), the product team's own site on GotDotNet (http://www.gotdotnet.com/team/netcf), and of course DevBuzz (http://www.devbuzz.com).

Conference eBooks > Enterprise Deployment Of Pocket PCs - How Sprite Ghost Turns A Pocket PC Into A Powerful Network Deployment Tool
The Creators Of The Famous Desktop Application, Ghost, Return With The Pocket PC Version Of the Popular Application, Sprite Clone - Sprite Software From Down Unda
Sean Connolly, one of the founders of Sprite Software, revealed how Sprite Clone can help enterprise IT professionals to deploy Pocket PC devices quickly and easily throughout an organization. Sean's Philadelphia Pocket PC Summit presentation is now available for free download -

At present, enterprises are considering rollouts of Pocket PC, but there is very little information about what tools are available to assist them in their deployments, and in the benefits of using imaging techniques to manage device set up and recovery. I would like the opportunity to explain the various options currently available for setting up large numbers of devices and provide detail of the pros and cons of each of the available options. I will also provide data on the time and cost savings over the lifetime of a Pocket PC that can be expected to be achieved if imaging techniques are used. The options currently available are as follows: Devices set up by the users themselves. – Currently prevalent, but likely to change as IT managers have to deal with the fallout of user issues. Devices set up by IT department using manual or semi-automatic installation methods. This is becoming more widespread as Pocket PCs increase in popularity and use and as the IT department becomes familiar with the issues involved. Devices set up by IT department using imaging techniques. This is likely to become the most popular method, in the same way that most desktop PCs are setup and managed by the company IT department.
