Flash
on Devices

Wanted: Java-like
tool with large developer community that is screen, browser, and
platform independent; supports advanced scripting, images, movies,
games, XML, and audio while generating compact files. This technology
requires a large installed base (viewable on 96% of all browsers)
and a high-performance, robust server component to create and manage
all data-driven content.
Take a look around you. At the office, on airplanes, subways, and
automobiles, many people carry some type of palm-sized device, such
as Web-connected phones and handheld computers.
With seemingly unlimited memory, add-ons, and updated processors,
palm-sized devices make it possible for people to access huge amounts
of information anytime from anywhere.
While the first round of devices stored and tracked appointments
and contact information, the second round of devices will support
rich media, Internet connections, and secure transactions. As these
devices become more prevalent, the demand for content quickly increases.
As such, when creating content for the Web, developers and designers
need to start thinking about authoring efficiently for multiple
devices, platforms, and browsers.
Enter: Macromedia Flash. Viewable across browsers and all Internet
appliances, Flash enables designers to author jazzy TV-quality animation
for viewing across multiple platforms. Furthermore, Flash files
are lightweight and therefore enable smooth broadcast-quality transitions.
Likewise, with Flash compact SWF files, designers can help eliminate
the full-screen download or "destructive refresh" that
happens as you click from page to page with chunky HTML.
That's not all. With Flash, designers and developers can build custom
user interfaces for devices and integrate those interfaces into
device applications while preserving the look and feel of the original
program. And perhaps most important, compared to device-specific
programming languages such as DHTML and C++, Flash is easy to learn.
And it gets better. Let me introduce Macromedia Generator, the server-side
solution for automating Flash content. Using Flash with Generator,
developers can substantially streamline the content management and
delivery process, and easily modify, re-skin, or re-brand content
for a variety of clients.
Leveraging Generator, developers can use Flash templates with ODBC/JDBC,
Java, middleware, and just about any form of structured data from
numerous sources.
Flash and Generator together present many interesting opportunities
for developers and designers for creating and deploying every form
of content imaginablefrom cartoons, to learning applications,
to data-driven chartsall in one familiar development environment.
True convergence of media, as well as the convergence of development
tools, is fast approaching. The Web professionals who succeed in
this new arena will be the ones who understand highly integrated
dynamic applications, who use development tools that span multiple
platforms, and who aggressively champion the user experience. In
my opinion, Flash and Generator developers are already one step
ahead of the pack. |
